Growing up in taranaki in the 1960's
bY KATHRYN WILLIAMS
The BOOK
It begun with my grand daughter asking me what is was like back in the ‘olden’ days.
Ugh shock horror. At nearly 60, I did not consider myself old but to a 10 year old I was. Then being asked if it was hard to use an abacus, really? Crikey, I thought, my granddaughter knows nothing about my childhood. The seed had been planted, the book had begun.
If you grew up as a kid (as we were called back then) then this book is for you. It doesn’t matter where you grew up, we all did the same things. The bonds we had with the neighborhood we grew up in and the people we knew. A trip back down memory lane to an era where our playground was outside. These are personal recollections from so many people that participated on my fb page and talks about our fashion, our culture, schooling (and yes the strap hurt), technology (and yes the wringer washing machine did chew your arm) and yes we did drink warm milk from milk bottles and fought over who had the cream on top when it was breakfast time.
I came to Nelson two years ago to finish the book and not everyone gets to do something they love every day for two years.
So now we have a book full of your memories and mine. I say we have a book because without each and every one of you contributing one memory, 100 memories or just clicked like, this book would not be possible. All I have done is put it all together in a book which I hope you all enjoy. 198 double sided A4 pages full of so many memories and photos.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared their memories and photos and for being part of the most amazing journey anyone could hope for. Reconnecting with past classmates has been phenomenal.
My 60s page on fb which is full of comments and photos and members is https://www.facebook.com/groups/238246439687731/
I have ordered a reprint as I have sold the 300 books I had printed in a month so if anyone wants to order a copy or wants to get in touch with me, please email me on [email protected].
My new book on the 70s has begun. Have a wonderful day. Please feel free to share my post if you think others may like to purchase a copy .
